Founded in 1904, Shanghai Sixth People’s Hospital, originally known as the Shanghai Westerners’ Quarantine Hospital, has developed into a large, comprehensive, and highly regarded tertiary hospital with over a century of history. In 2002, the hospital became affiliated with Shanghai JiaoTong University, and in February 2021, its original East Campus was fully integrated into the hospital, marking the beginning of a new chapter of high-quality development. In 2022, the hospital became the Sixth People’s Hospital Affiliated to the School of Medicine, Shanghai JiaoTong University.

The hospital has two campuses: Xuhui and Lingang. It is authorized for 2,556 beds (with 3,426 approved beds), of which 1,956 are located at the Xuhui campus (2,226 approved) and 600 at the Lingang campus (1,200 approved). It hosts 51 clinical and medical departments. In recent years, the hospital’s annual emergency visits have exceeded 5.3

million, with over 180,000 discharges and more than 120,000 surgeries performed.The hospital actively implements the spirit of the “Opinions on Strengthening Party Leadership in Public Hospitals,” ensuring the Party’s leadership in hospital governance. It adheres to the system of Party committee leadership under the responsibility of the hospital director. The hospital has been awarded the “National Civilized Unit” honor for six consecutive terms (19 years) and has maintained an “A” grade in the Shanghai municipal hospital performance assessments for 18 years. In 1958, Professor Zhou Yongchang and others founded the ultrasound diagnostic field in China, earning the hospital the title of “Birthplace of Chinese Ultrasound Diagnosis.” In 1963, Professors Chen Zhongwei and Qian Yunqing successfully performed the first replantation of a severed limb in medical history, making the hospital the “Cradle of Limb Replantation.” In 1978, Professor Yu Zhongjia’s successful reconstruction techniques for hand or finger amputations were hailed as the birthplace of “Chinese hands” and won the National Invention Award.

In recent years, the hospital has introduced numerous advanced technologies, including microsurgical reconstruction techniques in orthopedics, groundbreaking work in diabetes management in endocrinology, and innovative surgical methods in otorhinolaryngology.
