Shanghai First Maternity and Infant Hospital, founded in February 1947, is one of the earliest provincial and municipal maternity and child health hospitals in China. It was accredited as a baby-friendly hospital in 1992 and recognized as a Grade-A tertiary hospital in 1995. In 2006, it became affiliated with Tongji University, and in 2023, it was renamed as “Tongji University Affiliated Maternity and Obstetrics Hospital.” The hospital is a nationally recognized civilized unit, a Shanghai municipal civilized unit, and a designated healthcare provider for maternal and child health in Shanghai.

It is home to the “APAGE Asia-Pacific Endoscopy Training Base,” “Ministry of Health Level-4 Gynecological Endoscopic Diagnosis and Treatment Training Base,” “Shanghai Neonatal Critical Care Consultation and Rescue Center,” “Shanghai Prenatal Diagnosis Center,” and “Shanghai Obstetric Clinical Quality Control Center.” Additionally, it houses the Shanghai Maternal-Fetal Medicine Key Laboratory, Shanghai Institute for Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Gynecological Oncology Research, Translational Medicine Research Center of Tongji University School of Medicine, Maternal-Fetal Medicine Research Institute, Gynecological Oncology Research Institute, and the Maternal-Infant Health Science Center. The hospital is a leader in fields such as perinatal care, prenatal diagnosis, management of high-risk pregnancies, preterm infant care, infertility treatment, gynecological oncology, minimally invasive gynecological surgery, and gynecological urology and pelvic floor reconstruction. In 2022, the hospital handled 1.81 million outpatient and emergency visits, over 55,000 inpatient admissions, and delivered more than 26,000 babies.
After years of development, the obstetrics department has become a national clinical key specialty, while the gynecology department has been included as a priority clinical specialty in Shanghai. In 2022, the hospital secured 32 National Natural Science Foundation projects, maintaining a leading position in the field of obstetrics and gynecology nationwide for six consecutive years. It is also one of the first designated bases for the standardized training of resident physicians by the National Health Commission (formerly the National Health and Family Planning Commission) and Shanghai, and one of the first specialized obstetrics and gynecology training bases in Shanghai. The hospital offers 10 master’s degree programs, 9 doctoral degree programs, and has a postdoctoral training station for clinical medicine. There are currently 61 graduate mentors, including 38 doctoral advisors.
