Founded in 1907 and originally named Guangci Hospital, Ruijin Hospital is a leading tertiary teaching hospital with a history spanning over a century. The hospital currently operates three non-independent campuses (Huangpu Campus, Jiading Campus, and Yuanyang Campus) with a total of 2,742 authorized beds. It has consistently achieved the highest A++ grade in national public hospital performance evaluations for five consecutive years and has been awarded the “National Civilized Unit” honor for six consecutive terms. 

As a pioneer in high-quality development for public hospitals, Ruijin Hospital is one of the first national pilot hospitals for high-quality development and modern hospital management. It also serves as a National Emergency Medical Rescue Base, a pilot hospital for integrated Chinese and Western medicine, and was among the first selected for the National Medical Center (Comprehensive Category) program. The Ruijin Hainan Hospital operates as a National Regional Medical Center under its leadership.

Wang Zhenyi was honored with the Republic Medal and the National Highest Science and Technology Award.

In the 1950s, it gained international recognition for successfully treating a steelworker with severe burns covering 89.3% of his body, defying the global medical consensus of the time. In 1957, it diagnosed China’s first case of primary hyperaldosteronism, laying the foundation for endocrinology and metabolism research in the country. It also performed China’s first allogeneic heart and liver transplants in the 1970s. In the 1990s, Ruijin Hospital made groundbreaking advancements in leukemia research, with its “Shanghai Protocol” for acute promyelocytic leukemia becoming an internationally accepted standard of care. Most recently, the hospital played a leading role in the development of China’s first domestically produced proton therapy system.
