Founded in 1844, Renji Hospital is the first hospital practicing western medicine in Shanghai after its opening as a treaty port. Currently, the hospital comprises four campuses in the east, west, north, and south, as well as the Shanghai Cancer Institute. It is a comprehensive Grade III Class A hospital that boasts a complete range of disciplines and integrates medical care, teaching, and scientific research.
The east campus is located in the Lujiazui Financial and Trade Zone in Pudong, which was completed and put into use in October 1999. The west campus is situated in the Central Business District of Huangpu District, adjacent to the Bund. The south campus is located in Pujiang Town, Minhang District, which was completed and put into use in December 2012 and fully integrated into Renji Hospital on October 20, 2020. The north campus is located at the intersection of Juye Road and Lingshan Road, which was fully operational in July 2013. Shanghai Cancer Institute is located on Xietu Road, which officially merged with Renji Hospital in October 2010, forming a unified “institute-hospital” system.
Since its establishment, the hospital has boasted two academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. By the end of 2023, the hospital had a total of 4,780 full-time employees, including 714 experts with senior and associate senior professional titles; 177 doctoral supervisors and 208 master supervisors.
The four campuses in the east, west, south, and north of the hospital have a total of 2,750 approved beds and 54 clinical medical departments. In 2023, the hospital completed 6.4364 million outpatient and emergency visits, discharged 215,800 patients, performed 105,200 inpatient surgeries, including 31,500 fourth-level surgeries, 31,000 minimally invasive surgeries, and 41,100 day surgeries. The average length of hospital stay was 5.23 days, and the proportion of drug expenditure accounted for 24.43%.
The hospital is equipped withadvanced medical equipment such as dual-source photon-counting CT, positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT), positron emission tomography-magnetic resonance imaging (PET-MR), endoscopic surgical instrument control system (Da Vinci surgical robot), X-ray stereotactic radiotherapy system, helical tomotherapy system, linear accelerator (LA), 320-slice 640-layer ultra-fast spiral CT, hybrid operating room system, and telemedicine teaching system.
