Expertise

Dr. Zhong specializes in the surgical treatment of inflammatory bowel disease, as well as the minimally invasive treatment, neoadjuvant treatment and conversion therapy for gastrointestinal tumors, especially metastatic gastrointestinal tumors and low rectal cancer. He has increased the tumor resection rate, improved the success rate of anal preservation, and enhanced patients’ survival rate and quality of life. In terms of basic research, Dr. Zhong has led his team to start with the mechanisms underlying the occurrence and development of diseases, and has conducted in-depth studies on intestinal flora, long non-coding RNA, microRNA, tumor immunity, organoid culture, etc.

Professional Background

Dr. Zhong has been practicing in the Department of General Surgery at Renji Hospital ever since graduating from the Department of Clinical Medicine, Shanghai Second Medical University (now Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine). In 1998, he went to Takano Hospital in Japan to pursue research and advanced training in colorectal surgery. In 2000 and 2005, he underwent advanced training in laparoscopic colorectal surgery at Hong Kong Christian Union Hospital and Kwong Wah Hospital, respectively. In November 2011, he pursued advanced training in the management of inflammatory bowel disease at Cleveland Clinic, Ohio, USA. Currently, Dr. Zhong performs over 300 laparoscopic colorectal surgeries annually, a hallmark of clinical practice at Renji Hospital.
